Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive skin resurfacing option that is very safe for the skin. It is performed to rejuvenate the skin and to treat superficial skin issues. Microdermabrasion is sometimes referred to as a ‘lunchtime peel,’ and is also known by patented techniques like the Micro Peel. Microdermabrasion is used to improve a number of skin conditions such as age spots, enlarged pores, hyperpigmentation, acne scars, sun damage, and uneven skin tone. It is also used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

At Fountain of Youth Medispa here in Victoria, we perform microdermabrasion with a specially designed handpiece. The device directs a spray of crystals onto the skin at a high velocity, and they are then vacuumed up. This helps to exfoliate the skin and results in the removal of some of the top skin layers known as the stratum corneum. When those top layers are removed, the newer, fresher skin below the surface is exposed, and this helps make the complexion appear more radiant than before.

Microdermabrasion can be done on any part of the face and body but is usually performed on the face and neck. Results are usually noticeable immediately after the first treatment, but 5-8 treatments are required for optimal results. Sessions are usually spaced 10-14 days apart.

Why is Microdermabrasion superior to other acid methods of exfoliation?

Microdermabrasion has several advantages over acid methods of exfoliation. First of all, the results are immediate. This happens because of the vacuum action on the skin that causes the dermis to swell. When this occurs, the skin stretches and becomes tighter, thereby reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

In addition, the vacuum action also increases blood flow to the dermis. This causes an increase in fibroblast activity, which stimulates collagen and elastin in the short term. Also, the sloughing away of the stratum corneum removes dead skin cells and leads to better penetration of nutrients into the dermis. Over time, a new stratum corneum layer will emerge, and these nutrients will assist that formation.

Finally, microdermabrasion does not result in any of the acid burns that often accompany acid peels, and there is minimal downtime.
